Las Vegas has spent more than a month carrying a New York problem.
Tonight, the Aces finally get another chance to fix it.
The Las Vegas Aces host the New York Liberty at 7 p.m. Thursday, July 30, at Michelob ULTRA Arena. Las Vegas enters the matchup at 19-8, while New York arrives at 16-12.
This is not just another late-July game.
New York has already defeated Las Vegas twice this season. One loss happened inside the Aces’ own building. The other cost Las Vegas the Commissioner’s Cup championship.
Now the Liberty are back in town on Utah Starzz Legacy Night, when the Aces will honor the original identity of a franchise that began its journey in 1997.
Revenge, rivalry and nearly three decades of history are sharing the same court.
New York Has Owned the Matchup So Far
The Liberty delivered their first punch June 23 at Michelob ULTRA Arena, beating the Aces 87-76.
Las Vegas struggled from deep, making less than 30% of its 3-point attempts. Five Aces scored in double figures, but New York controlled the game well enough to leave Las Vegas with a double-digit victory.
One week later, the teams met again in Brooklyn for the Commissioner’s Cup championship.
New York won 93-85 behind 26 points from Sabrina Ionescu and a dominant performance from Breanna Stewart, who finished with 25 points, 11 rebounds, four assists, two steals and two blocks.
Las Vegas played without A’ja Wilson because of a foot injury. Jackie Young nearly dragged the Aces across the finish line anyway, scoring a game-high 31 points and adding seven assists.
The Aces erased a 15-point deficit and briefly took the lead in the fourth quarter. New York answered with a crushing 15-2 run and took the trophy.
That collapse should still be fresh.
A’ja Wilson Changes This Rematch
The biggest difference tonight is obvious.
Wilson is available.
The Aces superstar enters the rematch after recording 28 points and 14 rebounds in Tuesday’s victory. Young added 25 points while shooting efficiently from the floor.
That version of the Aces looks far more dangerous than the incomplete team New York defeated for the Commissioner’s Cup.
When the ball moves, Wilson controls the paint and Young attacks from every level, Las Vegas can overwhelm almost anybody.
New York has already proven it is not just anybody.
The Liberty Are Hot Again
New York enters Las Vegas on a three-game winning streak after beating the Los Angeles Sparks 113-109 on Tuesday.
Stewart scored 29 points and handed out seven assists. Ionescu finished with 27 points and made five 3-pointers.
The victory produced New York’s highest-scoring game of the season and continued a turnaround after the Liberty had dropped four straight.
Stewart can score inside, outside or from the free-throw line. Ionescu can turn one open look into three straight baskets. Las Vegas cannot afford to trade shots and hope its offense wins the night.
The Aces must defend before they start thinking about revenge.
Defense Is the Real Revenge Plan
Las Vegas can score with New York.
The bigger question is whether the Aces can stop the Liberty when the game reaches its most important five-minute stretch.
That means closing space around Ionescu, keeping Stewart away from her preferred spots and finishing defensive possessions with rebounds.
It also means avoiding the lapses that have made Las Vegas vulnerable against elite opponents.
New York has already won that battle twice.
Tonight gives Las Vegas a third test.
Utah Starzz Legacy Night Brings the Story Full Circle
The uniforms, name and city have changed, but this franchise did not begin in Las Vegas.
It started as the Utah Starzz in 1997 as one of the WNBA’s original eight teams. The franchise relocated to San Antonio in 2003 before moving to Las Vegas ahead of the 2018 season.
Since arriving in Las Vegas, the organization has become one of the defining powers in women’s professional basketball.
Thursday’s game is part of the franchise’s Legacy Night celebration during the WNBA’s 30th season. Utah Starzz history will be featured throughout Michelob ULTRA Arena, connecting the team’s original identity to what the Aces have become.
That makes tonight bigger than nostalgia.
The Starzz represent where the franchise started. The Aces represent what it became.
New York represents the obstacle standing directly in front of its next championship run.
A Rivalry That Keeps Finding Bigger Stages
The Aces and Liberty no longer need a playoff series to make a regular-season game feel important.
They have met in the WNBA Finals. They have battled for the Commissioner’s Cup. Their stars have become some of the most recognizable players in the sport.
Every meeting now carries evidence into the next one.
New York can leave Las Vegas having won three straight against the Aces this season. Las Vegas can finally change the conversation and prove that its full-strength lineup creates a different matchup.
The teams will meet again in August, so tonight will not settle everything.
