Two conventions, two hotel-demand zones
August delivered a serious one-two convention punch for Las Vegas hotels, but not in the way early calendars might have suggested. DEF CON 34 ran August 6 through 9, 2026, at the Las Vegas Convention Center’s West Hall. SUPERZOO followed with education sessions August 11 and 12 and its trade-show floor August 12 through 14 at Mandalay Bay Convention Center.
That timing matters. These events did not converge on the same Thursday, and they did not create one giant citywide check-in collision. Instead, they produced successive waves of convention traffic in different parts of the resort corridor. DEF CON concentrated demand around the Las Vegas Convention Center and the north Strip. SUPERZOO shifted the action south to Mandalay Bay and its neighboring resorts.
The clean takeaway is this: hotel demand strengthened in targeted pockets across a nine-day stretch, but claims of 95 percent occupancy, 40 to 60 percent rate increases or universal Strip sellouts cannot be supported without final market data. Vegas was busy. It was not automatically impossible.
DEF CON put the convention corridor on high alert
DEF CON 34 brought its talks, villages, contests and community events under one roof at the West Hall, a major change from the conference’s earlier Caesars-area footprint. The official venue page said the conference was using roughly 800,000 square feet, compared with about 550,000 square feet at its former convention location.
That move rewired the hotel map. Caesars Palace, Flamingo, The LINQ and Harrah’s were not the center of gravity described in the original assumptions about this year’s conference. DEF CON’s official 2026 room-block list instead included Fontainebleau, Sahara, Wynn and Encore, Circus Circus, Embassy Suites, SpringHill Suites and Renaissance Las Vegas. Fontainebleau and Sahara were marked sold out on the conference’s venue page.
That is real evidence of concentrated demand near West Hall. Fontainebleau and Sahara sit close to the convention center, while Renaissance and nearby limited-service properties appeal to attendees who prioritize a short commute over casino-floor energy. Wynn and Encore offered a higher-end Strip option within practical reach of the venue.
The big hotel lesson was proximity. A bargain far down the Strip could lose its shine once rideshare fares, traffic and daily travel time entered the equation. For four days, the smart room was not necessarily the flashiest room. It was the room that got attendees to West Hall without turning every morning into a transportation mission.
SUPERZOO moved the action to Mandalay Bay
SUPERZOO, which bills itself as North America’s largest marketplace for the pet industry, brought the next demand wave to Mandalay Bay. Organizer materials promoted a scale of more than 18,000 pet professionals and 1,100 exhibitors, with the main show floor open August 12 through 14.
For this crowd, Mandalay Bay was the premium convenience play. W Las Vegas, formerly Delano, and Luxor also had obvious appeal because SUPERZOO used badge-printing locations at Mandalay Bay, W Las Vegas and Luxor. The show’s official hotel and travel information also highlighted the complimentary tram linking Mandalay Bay, Luxor and Excalibur.
That gave the south Strip its own compression zone. Exhibitors arriving before the trade-show floor opened, buyers staying through Friday and vendors moving display materials all favored hotels close to the convention center. Resorts farther north could still compete on price, but convenience belonged to the Mandalay Bay campus and its immediate neighbors.
What the calendar actually did to demand
The August calendar created a relay, not a pileup. DEF CON ended Sunday, August 9. SUPERZOO education began Tuesday, August 11, followed by the trade show on Wednesday. Monday served as the turnover point between the two groups, although exhibitor arrivals and extended stays could still produce some crossover.
That pattern matters to hotel operators. A single overlapping night can create a dramatic squeeze. Successive events work differently, helping sustain weekday room demand while shifting pressure from one neighborhood to another. Housekeeping teams turn rooms, group desks manage separate blocks and convention hotels move from one attendee profile to the next.
DEF CON’s demand leaned toward the convention-center corridor, with official blocks spread among resorts and business-oriented hotels. SUPERZOO’s demand was more tightly anchored to a resort convention complex at the south end of the Strip. The two events supported the broader August hotel market, but they did not affect every property equally.
Why unsupported rate predictions miss the mark
There is no responsible basis for declaring that Strip rates rose by a fixed percentage because of these two shows alone. Las Vegas hotel pricing moves constantly according to property, room type, booking date, loyalty status, resort fees, entertainment calendars and other conventions in town. A standard room at Sahara and a suite at Wynn are not pieces of the same pricing puzzle.
The same caution applies to occupancy. An official room block marked sold out does not mean the hotel itself has no rooms. It means the designated inventory at the negotiated group rate is gone. Additional rooms may remain through the hotel’s direct booking channel, sometimes at a different price or under different cancellation terms.
Still, those sold-out DEF CON blocks are a useful signal. They show that attendees actively targeted hotels near the venue. SUPERZOO’s official housing program and warning about low inventory similarly demonstrate strong demand within its preferred hotel network, though they do not establish a citywide occupancy rate.
The Vegas playbook for future convention weeks
This August reinforced a classic local rule: follow the venue before following the cheapest advertised rate. Las Vegas Boulevard looks compact on a map, but a room several miles from a convention can turn a three-day show into a marathon of rideshare pickups and traffic.
- For West Hall events: Start with hotels around the convention center, north Strip and Paradise Road. Check the organizer’s official room blocks before roaming across third-party booking sites.
- For Mandalay Bay events: Price Mandalay Bay, W Las Vegas, Luxor and Excalibur as a connected cluster. Tram access can be worth more than a small nightly discount elsewhere.
- Compare the complete stay: Include resort fees, taxes, parking and transportation before deciding which room is cheaper.
- Read the cancellation terms: A refundable reservation can preserve flexibility when rates move, but travelers should never assume every group rate can be changed without a penalty.
- Use official housing partners: SUPERZOO specifically warned attendees about unauthorized housing companies and identified Connections Housing as its official provider.
The final read on August
DEF CON 34 and SUPERZOO gave Las Vegas hotels two substantial convention-demand waves this month. DEF CON energized the West Hall corridor and helped fill official blocks at nearby properties. SUPERZOO then pulled business toward Mandalay Bay and the south Strip.
The impact was meaningful, but it was localized and sequential rather than one citywide explosion. That distinction is the whole game. In Vegas, knowing where the crowd is moving can save time, money and a brutal cross-Strip commute. You heard it here first: the venue map is the hotel strategy.
