He Climbed the Vegas Sphere for Fame… Now, He’s Paying the High Price

A man’s viral Sphere climb in Las Vegas ends with jail time and a massive financial penalty.

Las Vegas is built on wild moments. But this one came with a price tag.

A man who scaled the massive Sphere on the Strip during a 2024 stunt is now officially paying for it, both with jail time and tens of thousands of dollars in damage.

The Climb That Stopped the Strip

Back in February 2024, Maison Des Champs went live on social media as he climbed the exterior of the Sphere, turning a dangerous act into a viral spectacle.

He later told reporters he simply saw the structure and believed it was climbable. He also claimed admiration for the building and pointed out that Las Vegas was his hometown.

The climb did not go unnoticed.

A Sphere engineer spotted him mid-ascent, triggering a response that brought security teams and police to the top of the structure, where he was ultimately detained.

The Damage Was Real and Expensive

What looked like a stunt for attention turned into a costly problem.

Representatives from Sphere Entertainment later broke down the damage in court:

  • Hundreds of LED light components were impacted

  • Structural carriers had to be replaced

  • Wiring systems were damaged

  • Specialized rope teams were deployed for inspection and repair

The original estimate came in at around $100,000.

Updated assessments pushed that number even higher to $107,686.32.

The final restitution ordered by the court? $77,270.32.

Inside the Courtroom

During sentencing, defense attorneys argued that not all the damage could be directly tied to the climb.

They suggested other factors like weather, lightning, or even bird activity could have contributed to the wear and tear on the Sphere’s exterior.

They also questioned documentation of every damaged component.

Still, the court moved forward based on the evidence presented.

The Sentence

Judge Danielle Pieper handed down the final decision:

  • 364-day suspended sentence

  • 45 days in the Clark County Detention Center

  • 1 year of probation

  • $77,270.32 in restitution

Des Champs had already accepted a plea deal in late 2025, admitting to reckless conduct that put people and property at risk.

Not the Only Ones Involved

Three additional individuals were arrested in connection with the incident:

  • Lori Hurley

  • Aaron Hurley

  • David Velasquez

However, prosecutors later dropped all charges against them, and their cases were dismissed.

The Bigger Picture

This wasn’t just a stunt. It exposed something deeper about modern Vegas.

The city thrives on attention. Big lights. Bigger moments. Viral clips.

But the Sphere is not just another attraction. It is a high-tech structure designed with precision, not built to handle someone climbing across its exterior.

Even Sphere officials noted that most repairs are done from the inside because the outer components are not meant to support human weight.

Why This Matters in Vegas

Las Vegas runs on spectacle. But there is a line between entertainment and risk.

This moment showed how quickly a viral stunt can turn into:

  • Criminal charges

  • Major financial consequences

  • Real safety concerns

And in a city pushing into the future with billion-dollar attractions, security and protection are only going to get tighter.

The ESB Take

Vegas will always attract people chasing attention.

But the new Vegas is different.

Bigger builds. More tech. Higher stakes.

You can still go viral here. Just know the cost of doing it the wrong way might follow you long after the views disappear.

Because in this city, everything is bigger.

Including the consequences.
